Aquaman opens to a record breaking $ 94M In China2 min read
James Wan’s and WB/DC’s Aquaman has had the first weekend in the Middle Kingdom crossing $93.6 M. That puts it at the top of all the opening weekend numbers for a DC comics adaptation on the big screen. Speaking of studio benchmarks , it also has the title for the biggest WB movie opening in China now.
Charting 66 percent above Ready Player One , 92 percent above Justice League , 78 percent above Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and having crossed the lifetime gross of Wonder Woman , it is safe to say Aquaman had an incredible opening in China. This comes as a pro move from the studio executives as Aquaman will have a head start when it competes with the likes of Mary Poppins and Bumblebee when it opens in US later in the month.
According to Hollywood Reporter , Aquaman also delivered the biggest industry opening in China for the month of December, commanding 85 percent of market share with a $9.7 M IMAX gross so far. With a decent enough multiplier , we might be looking towards a $200+ M lifetime gross in China easily. It is also to be noted that Aquaman opens in significant foreign markets next week before it breaks in US theaters the week after.
