Avengers : Infinity War – Director reveals how Thor could have saved half the universe but didn’t4 min read
Huge spoiler alert for Avengers : Infinity War for those who have not seen the movie. Honestly though, what the hell are you guys doing with your life? Go see it, have a good time.
Well, now everybody who has seen the movie would agree that Thor was the MVP of the film. His arc was the most satisfying one among the heroes and watching him single-handedly destroy Thanos’s army with a Stormbreaker in his hand gave us nerdgasms to say the least. When Thanos arrived in Wakanda, Thor had a chance to stop the Mad Titan with his incredibly strong axe. The new axe, forged in a dying star Nidavellir earlier in the film, pierced through Thanos’s Infinity Gauntlet’s powers to ultimately land in his chest.
Now what fans have not recognized so far is that the move was intentional. The move allowed Thanos to snap his fingers and erase half of the universe, which Thor will fully regret seeing as his aim was deliberate. Directors of Avengers : Infinity War threw some light on the context which can change many perspectives about the hero. While talking about how some people are mad at Peter Quill aka Star Lord for ruining the Avenger’s game , the filmmaker switched to another hero who can be equally blamed. “I would argue that the fan base could be equally upset with Thor, who chose to throw that ax into Thanos chest and not his head,” Joe Russo tells ComicBook.com. “Because he wanted to tell Thanos that he got his revenge.”
So it was not that heroic after all. Then again you have to consider the fact that Thor was going for all out revenge in the movie. By the time he stabbed the Stormbreaker in Thanos’s chest he had lost almost everything. Revenge was the only thing he was living for – and he made it quite clear in his conversation with Rocket. The director further added “Had he gone for a kill shot, that snap would not have happened. These are choices that characters who are feeling immense pain make and hopefully, the audience can learn to empathize with those characters because they can grow through stories. Stories can teach us things and that we should try to see every choice from the perspective of the character that made the choice.“
Maybe this can be a guilty factor for the god of thunder in the upcoming Avengers 4 which might help him achieve more crazy feats ? Because not to forget , snapping half of the life form to cease to exist took a toll on the Mad Titan.”That moment when he clicks his fingers sends him into this ethereal plane inside of the Soul Stone where as part of his quote unquote hero’s journey in the film, he has one last moment to convey a sense of guilt about what he’s done,” Joe Russo said. “It illustrates what a complicated character he is.“
As for Star-Lord, Joe Russo teases that there is no chance for him to redeem himself, “because he is dead.“Does this tid-bit from the director make you feel any differently about Thor ? Let us know in the comments section below. Also be sure to follow us for more superhero updates.
