Disney unlikely to rehire James Gunn for GOTG v37 min read
As sad as it is , in-spite of the great support from the crew , It doesn’t look like James Gunn is coming back to assemble his famous cosmic team for one final time. As we all know , Disney fired Gunn a few days ago on the resurface of some old tweets. And by old , we mean almost a decade old. And what’s interesting enough is that the unearthing was done by a right-wing conspiracy theorist Mike Cernovich. That itself created a huge political unrest in the Hollywood with many regarding the decision as hypocrisy.
But that has not prevented a huge number of fans from coming out to provide their support to the film-maker with petitions and request tweets. While some condoned Gunn for having such a twisted sense of humor at a point in the past , a majority are angry at the way and nature it unearthed pointing it to a controversy. Many prominent faces from outside and inside the Marvel Cinematic Universe showed their support for Gunn asking the studio to rehire him. Director Ryan Johnson deleted almost 20,000 of his tweets and he was not the only one in the process.
“We fully support James Gunn. We were all shocked by his abrupt firing last week and have intentionally waited these ten days to respond in order to think, pray, listen, and discuss.” the Guardians of the Galaxy cast wrote in a support letter. “In that time, we’ve been encouraged by the outpouring of support from fans and members of the media who wish to see James reinstated as director of Volume 3 as well as discouraged by those so easily duped into believing the many outlandish conspiracy theories surrounding him. His story isn’t over — not by a long shot. There is little due process in the court of public opinion. James is likely not the last good person to be put on trial. Given the growing political divide in this country, it’s safe to say instances like this will continue, although we hope Americans from across the political spectrum can ease up on the character assassinations and stop weaponizing mob mentality.”

The letter ,as you can see above , was signed by all the cast members. However this seems to have little to no effect on the studio , the officials of which are seriously dissapointed with the old tweets of Gunn with jokes revolving around pedophilia , 9/11 , AIDS and rape. According to Variety , Disney insiders said that the company was not aware of the offensive tweets and was taken aback when they were recirculated. This is another debatable topic as Gunn has been infamous for his online presence more than once. In 2012, the now 51 year old American film-maker apologized for a blog post he wrote in 2011, titled “The 50 Superheroes You Most Want to Have Sex With.”
In it, Gunn speculated that Iron Man could “turn” the lesbian Bat-woman into a heterosexual, labeled Gambit a “Cajun fruit,” and called Batgirl, who is a teenage mother in the comics, “easy.” Facing a backlash, Gunn said he regretted making “poorly worded” statements. However , whatever the case may be , the tweets which are not at all in line with Disney’s family friendly image seems to have drawn to an unshakable decision from the mouse. “I don’t see Disney re-hiring him,” says one person close to the matter. “Those tweets were so horrible and Disney has a different standard then other studios.”
While the cast letter just fell short of threatening the studio to walk away from their roles , it sees unlikely of them to leave.Especially when they are bonded by a contract , which when violated seeks legal penalties. Whatever their personal feelings may be , they are all professionals working under higher authorities. As for Gunn , it seems that this is the time when Gunn says goodbye to his interstellar team.
