Arthur Curry accepts his roots in the first trailer for James Wan’s Aquaman3 min read

The wait for another DC Film may seem like an eternity for a DC fan but the fans of the king of the seven seas has indeed waited for an eternity. And it’s finally here ! Aquaman is making his much anticipated swim into the big screens with the vision of James Wan and damn ! the first trailer looks mind blowing.

Aquaman will be more like a sci-fi fantasy movie than a superhero movie,” filmmaker James Wan said of the movie before giving us our first look at the movie. However Nicole Kidman , who plays Arthur Curry’s mother Queen Atlana , lives for simpler things. “I was so lucky because I got to lie on a rock. My opening shot in the film is being washed up on a rock. ” she said. “Massive waves crashing over me. The bigger the better! ‘Come on, James [Wan], give it to me!’ That’s why I’m doing this movie.” Yahya Abdul-Mateen II who plays Black Manta in the movie practiced a lot of swimming but unfortunately he need not swim at all in the movie.

However , the footage at SDCC was a bit longer and reportedly had Jason Momoa in the full orange costume like in the comics. “What could be greater than a king?” Arthur asks. “A hero,” replies Mera. Aquaman will follow Jason Momoa’s Aquaman after the incidents of Justice League as he sets on a path to become the heir to the throne of Atlantis. Stopping him will be the villainous Prince Orm played by the brilliant William Patrick Wilson and Black Manta played by Yahya Abdul-Mateen II. But Arthur would get help in the form of Mera played by Amber Heard and Vulko played by Willem Dafoe to be the king he is destined to be.

While the plot may seem generic , its the setting and environment which makes the story more compelling.  We have seen men fly , aliens drop from the sky , abominations but this is the first time superhero storytelling has taken a dive into the uncharted depths. Following that is the mysterious sea creatures living in the dark depths and a prospect for a lot of fictional world building. Luckily James Wan is getting a lot of help in this regard from one of the finest VFX studio : ILM. And that is evident in the trailer itself.
