New photos give us our first look at DC Universe’s Jason Todd5 min read
Jason Todd is in the DC Universe’s Titans live action show – the rumors were true it seems. Played by the 20 year old actor Curran Walters , the most popular yet infamous version of the Boy Wonder is set to debut in the show along with the first Robin , Dick R Grayson.
Judging by the first trailer where Dick curses Batman , it looks like both are at the opposite field of the emotional tension with Batman. Jason is , after all , a replacement , to Grayson.
“What I really love about [Jason] as a character is the unbridled sense of self that he has – there’s a lack of… maybe self-awareness, but for sure self-consciousness in terms of how he comports himself and how he moves through the world,” show runner Greg Walker told IGN.
“He’s completely seemingly unaffected by darkness – he kind of embraces it or walks right through it. He’s a breath of fresh air and that’s what I love about him, he’s got a punk rock, no-holds-barred attitude that’s massively unburdened. There’s a lot of energy that comes with that.”
It can be sensed by the show runner’s comments that what is the reason why Dick is so pissed off at Batman at the moment. But we as comic book fans know , that when the time comes , Dick would be the one to show the emotional maturity. Because if the lore of Dark Knight has proved anything , Jason can be equally giving and …
But that is a distant decision that might not be taken in the show at all. For now , Jason Todd is a teenager addicted to the velocity and style of the Dark Knight. Show runner Walker teases this in the new Robin depicting how it causes a short of conflict when two generations come in contact with different perception about a person – how did the show chose to demonstrate the gap ?
It’s funny for the comic book fans who know the same thing happened to Todd later and he managed it worse than Dick. But here , it seems apart from the emotional conflict we would also see the duo in action.
“It’s kind of like one of those classic covers of the books, original versus number 2, and in many ways, you really see that [in the photos]. This encapsulates the tension, the energy between these two guys. It’s like running into your ex-girlfriend’s new boyfriend, minus the sexual tension,” Walker laughed.
“You get to watch Dick Grayson struggle when he sees another Robin and how that Robin is different and has a different relationship with ‘dad.’ And the second child gets away with stuff the first child would never get away with in a family, and ours is really a family show.”
This should be the proper moment to discuss the upbringing of the two kids before Batman met them. One was a orphan around the streets on the edge to fall off to the dark side while the other roots from a similar place as the Dark Knight.
The youngest in a family of acrobats known as the “Flying Graysons”, Dick watches a mafia boss named Tony Zucco kill his parents in an act of a failed act. I am not trying to imply towards the fact that Todd always had a dark side in him – I am simply noting out how Dick was always a greater hero. Maybe something Jason could not afford to be….
And what’s there to admire from the show that in midst of the whole Titans thing , they chose to demonstrate this tension so early in the stage. Irrespective of how things roll out to be after that , we are more likely to get a better insight into Grayson’s heart. Jason could also witness Dick’s journey from Robin to Nightwing and probably learn something from it.
With that being said , let us know what you feel about another Robin , Jason Todd being introduced into the show. Let us know about it all in the section down below and follow us for more superhero updates. And before you go , here’s a picture of the entire team assembled (via EW)
