[Spoilers] Avengers : Infinity War directors delve into some shocking details about the backstory of Thanos5 min read
Marvel Studios’s Avengers: Infinity War brings to the screen the ultimate, deadliest showdown of all time. Directors Anthony and Joe Russo take us through the journey.
It is almost time. In 17 days destiny will arrive at theaters near us. The curtain call of MCU will arrive in the form of Avengers : Infinity War on April 27th. The movie had passed the pre-sales record of Black Panther in a matter of a few hours. So one can understand the the amount of hype that is building up for this one.
Now in a new interview with Telegraph India Joe and Anthony Russo , the directors of Avengers : Infinity War have spoken in length about their journey into the MCU and what Infinity War will bring to the table. Read along..
When asked about what makes Thanos a different kind of antagonist who have come before him, Joe Russo had this to say “Thanos happens to believe that what he is doing is right, and he behaves nobly towards that goal. But he will not stop until he achieves the goal because he believes that there is weakness that stands between him and the completion of the goal.
We thought it was fascinating to tell a story from the point of view of a villain. So when you watch the film, you’ll see that the film is told from Thanos’ perspective. That offers a unique insight into our heroes, but it also offers a unique insight into villains and how they think.”
Now the next bit of info contains mild spoilers for the movie so if you want to go in fully blind in the theatre skip this one.
When asked about why Thanos is doing all this and what is his backstory the directors revealed quite a bit about the Mad Titan’s past life, Joe revealed “Many years prior to the film his planet was experiencing a cataclysmic shift. They were running out of resources, and they were overpopulated. Thanos made a recommendation that they exterminate half the population randomly in order to save the rest of the population. Of course, the Titans rejected his notion, branded him a mad man, exiled him, and the planet ended up dying. So he has taken it upon himself to go planet-by-planet throughout the universe and wipe out half of the population of each planet as a way to correct the planet and bring it back into balance.”
The cinematic version of Thanos is obviously going to be quite different then his comic counterpart. In the comics Thanos was obsessed with the physical manifestation of death. So much so that he accumulated all the stones so that he could kill everybody and gift that to his beloved. Mad enough right? But obviously the cinematic version will be a bit different from the source material.
Now the interviewer asked the directors about the impact the events of Captain America : Civil War will have on Tony Stark/Iron Man going forward into Infinity War. Joe Russo’s answers really gives you an insight into Tony’s life.
“It was a really messy divorce. You love both your parents, and you don’t want to see that happen. But it did. So moving forward into Avengers: Infinity War, Tony is in a place where he harbours guilt about what happened. But I don’t know if he’s ready to forgive. This movie is a ticking-clock film. Once it starts it doesn’t stops until the end. We refer to it as a smash and grab heist movie. Once Thanos starts collecting the stones, he’s doing it with speed. So Tony doesn’t have a lot of time to reflect. He only has time to act. But I think that the ramifications of Civil War reverberate deeply throughout Avengers: Infinity War.”
