UPDATE : Spider-verse wins golden globe while Aquaman gets ready to join the billion dollar club2 min read
2019 started off with a blast for comic book fans. Considering what the studios have in their sleeves for us for this year , this comes out as even bigger news. Spider-Man : Into the Spider-verse has now won the 76th Golden Globe award for the best animated motion picture. The multi dimensional web adventure is SONY’s first attempt to let the fans deep dive into the visceral lore of Spider-man , through animation. The movie is co-directed by Bob Persichetti, Peter Ramsey and Rodney Rothman.
With an estimated $90 million production budget (without P&A), the animated featurette has earned over $275.3 million worldwide ($133.8 M domestic; $141.5 M foreign) and continues to hold strong nearly a month after its initial theatrical debut. A sequel is already in development.
In other news , with the help of a third weekend , Aquaman not only crossed Batman v Superman to become the highest grossing DCEU movie ever (worldwide numbers) but it is also taking aim for a billion at the moment. Continuing the winning streak over the weekends , Aquaman now sits over a domestic gross of $260 M and a worldwide cume of $940 M. Considering the legs the James Wan directed flick is carrying into the new year and that it is still to be released in Japan next month , the billion dollar club is now just a matter of time for Aquaman.
While it still lags behind the likes of Batman v Superman in terms of domestic numbers , it has well crossed many prominent comic book movies on foreign soil. Whatever be the case , this is a major win for DC and a proof of the potential of the comic book house’s characters , if done right. Upcoming DC releases include Sandberg’s Shazam , Todd Phillip’s Joker and Patty Jenkin’s Wonder Woman 1984.
